People: Hattie's Gardens provides vocational training for adults with disabilities in Northeast Ohio. Our supported participants work in all areas of production and tasks of Hattie's Gardens. Currently, our staff consists of 11 supported employees and we hope to have upwards of 20 supported participants through 2014.
Products: Heirloom and hybrid vegetable varieties- tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, winter squash, head lettuce, spring mix, spinach, potatoes, broccoli, kale, cabbage, carrots, onions, a small variety of berries, floral and cooking herbs.
Certifications: USDA/ OEFFA certified organic
Farm History: Hattie's Gardens began as a small training program in May of 2011. Over the past three years we have expanded to 8 total acres with approximately 3.5 acres in production. Hattie's Gardens is first and foremost a training program for adults with disabilities. We focus on training in organic vegetable, herb and fruit production. Hattie's Gardens is part of the non-profit organization Hattie Larlam. Hattie Larlam has many vocational training programs including Hattie's Cages, Doggie Daycare, Housekeeping, Hattie's Bakery, and Vending.
Soil: Any amendments to production soil are approved through OEFFA. Large-scale composting efforts help to reduce our demand for outside inputs.
Water Use: We try to use water sustainably. Water is sourced by on-site wells/ponds. Irrigation is maintained through direct "drip-line" methods with occasional hand watering in indoor production areas.
Weed Control: Mulching, hand weeding, small tool cultivation. No herbicides used.
Pest Control: Companion planting, crop rotation, row cover. Any applied pest management technique is OEFFA approved.
Fun Facts: Hattie's gardens first started with a 400 square foot garden in 2011. We are hoping to produce vegetables, herbs and fruits on 3.5 acres this year.
