Why is it important?

We as consumers like to have options. We like to decide what we eat, where we purchase it, and how we prepare it.

In order to protect those choices we must preserve farmland.

If we want grass fed beef and free-range chicken, we better have some grass for the cattle to eat and a range for the chickens to roam.

When we place preserving farmland as a priority, we place value in what we eat, what we drink, and what we breathe.

Farmland protects our food source, sequesters carbon, and when properly managed — keeps our drinking water clean.

Ohio is 2nd in the Nation in the loss of prime farmland!

According to the American Farmland Trust, Ohio is losing prime farmland at an alarming rate, and at the same time our population growth is stagnate.  What this means, is that we are using farmland to move our population.  This is a dangerous scenario.

Solutions:

  • Communities (Villages and Townships) can plan and zone for agricultural and conservation areas.  How? Contact Us
  • Transfer of Development Rights (TDR).  TDR is not yet enabled through legislation in the State of Ohio, but efforts are ongoing to make this possible in Ohio.  For more info visit: The Center For Farmland Policy Innovation
