Countryside Local Food Swaps have become one of the most popular programs we offer through Countryside U. We have a Facebook page for the group - have you seen it? It's an active and fun space, but I'd love to coax more of the nearly 300 members into showing up at a swap! So we wanted you to hear from a regular swapper about why she goes, and why you should, too. Introducing Maggie Olson!
CU: How would you describe the food swaps?
MO: It's a chance to showcase your favorite new recipe and spend time with new and familiar friends. One part social hour, one part food tasting, one part organized chaos.
CU: What's the best part about food swap?
MO: I love milling around, tasting everyone's treats, and chatting with the other swappers. The day after food swap is just as fun: all you eat is food swap food, so it feels as if all your friends made your breakfast, lunch, and dinner for you. When it comes right down to it, it's just a bunch of people who get together every month to eat, swap cooking tips, gossip, and spend quality time together. I don't have any family in Ohio, but food swap feels like the next best thing!
CU: What advice would you give to someone thinking about participating in the food swaps?
MO: Don't be intimidated. Swappers love newcomers. Just embrace the mild chaos, enjoy the good company, and taste everything! Also, come to at least two swaps. The first swap is when you get the lay of the land, figure out how the evening works, and see what kinds of items are popular. The second swap is when you really get to shine because you know what to expect - and you get to see all your new friends.
