Countryside Farmers' Markets is looking for a helping hand to plan and execute the markets! 

Farmers’ Market Intern ~ Winter/Spring 2017

The Farmers’ Market Intern provides support to the Farmers’ Market Manager in planning, preparing for and executing the Countryside Farmers’ Market. This includes on-site support, coordination with vendors and market sites, facilitating market events and programs, communicating with customers, and collection and analysis of market data. The Farmers’ Market Intern will gain an understanding of the logistics involved in managing successful and sustainable farmers’ markets, trends, benefits and challenges in small-scale agriculture and food production, and factors involved in engaging the public with local food and markets to establish a reliable customer base. 

On-Site Market Support – Select Saturdays, March through May, 6:30am – 1:00pm

  • Market Set-Up
    • Transport market supplies to market site
    • Prepare site for vendor arrival and set-up
    • Set-Up Market Information booth
    • Provide direction to market set-up volunteers
    • Troubleshoot site issues and vendor concerns
  • Market Hours
    • Provide customer service at Market Information booth
    • Sell market tokens, including credit card, EBT and Carrot Cash tokens
    • Answer questions about market vendors, product availability, market schedule and Countryside Conservancy as necessary
    • Respond to site, customer, and vendor issues as necessary
  • Post-Market
    • Assist with fee collection and token buyback
    • Close site as necessary
    • Return market supplies to Countryside office

Office Support – Schedule and hours negotiable, Tuesday through Friday

  • Market Reconciliation
    • Reconcile market cash, electronic transactions, collected fees to find and address any discrepancies; reset all currencies for next market
  • Market Preparation
    • Confirm vendor attendance and adjust maps and website as necessary
    • Confirm musician and event details
    • Prepare market webpage to reflect current items in season and available, musician, sponsor and additional event information
  • Vendor Applications and Selection
    • Manage incoming applications for 2017 season, including required licenses and insurances
    • Assist in report preparation to assess applicants based on previous season market data
    • Schedule site visits for producer verification 

Special Project Opportunities, based on interest and skills – Schedule and hours negotiable, Tuesday through Friday

  • Marketing
    • Weekly communication with customers about market vendor attendance, product availability, events and schedule
    • Prepare 2017 season campaign, with focus on opening days, Highland Square market relocation, events and programming
  • Zero Waste implementation at Howe Meadow
  • Countryside Kids expansion
  • Weekly and special event coordination, including musicians, cooking demos, tastings, others as planned
  • Volunteer coordination and management

Qualifications: Must be available on Saturday mornings and have reliable transportation. Must be willing and able to do physical work in all weather conditions, lift objects ~50 lbs, and be comfortable with driving a large truck. Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

Position Details: This is a part-time (20-30 hours per week), short-term internship; anticipated start date of February 21, 2017 and anticipated end date of May 6, 2017. A modest stipend will be provided.
