~ from Serena, Farmers' Market Manager ~
It finally happened. I had a spiritual experience while eating spinach.
I never even liked spinach that much. I knew it was good for you, and wouldn't mind if it was in a dish, but I could take it or leave it.
That is not the case anymore. In some sort of Popeye fashion, I started to wildly crave spinach about a month ago.
A farmer at the market told me that spinach was still a few weeks out, and to expect it at Howe Meadow by the end of August. It's a strange thing to be waiting on nature to provide me with the goods, but I made mental plans to let my craving build in the wait for spinach.
On the stated day of spinach's arrival at the market, I passed by the vendor I wanted to get it from a few times, as if building up the courage to ask someone out on a date.
When I finally had my gusto gathered to state my intention of purchasing some spinach please, it felt like I had won the lottery. Two beautiful bags of giant, emerald, handsome leaves, finally in my hands.
I took my prizes back to the information tent and not so silently celebrated by eating some right then out of the bag, at 8:30am on a Saturday.
Something about the texture, sweetness, and vibrancy of that fresh picked local spinach hit me. It made me feel like everything in life is going to be okay. It made me want to share this experience with all three people that were nearby. It also felt like my entire spine aligned for the first time since I turned 30.
I'm not saying this will happen to you, I'm just saying how do you know it won't?
Spinach is now available at Howe Meadow, Saturdays from 9am-noon.
