Tomato Tastings • 2019

23-Jul-2019

Mr. Stripey, Jersey Boy, Celebrity, Early Girl, Hillbilly, Moneymaker...

No, these are not racehorses, they’re tomato varieties!

There are over 10,000 different kinds of tomatoes out there - with different shapes, sizes, colors, and flavors. That's a lot to taste, compare and remember. We're here to help!

Our Howe Meadow Tomato Tasting is our most popular market day. This season we're bringing the event to our other markets as well - because each market is different, so are the events!

Thursday, August 8th • Countryside Farmers’ Market at Highland Square 4pm-7pm

Taste varieties from Ash Creek Farm, Martha's Farm and Rainbow Gardens.

Plus a Salsa Smackdown! Enter your favorite (locally-sourced) salsa to win a Countryside cutting board - handcrafted by Darbynwoods Find Woodworking (made with Ohio wood!) and engraved with the Countryside chicken.
To enter: email Serena at sjones@cvcountryside.org to register. Bring your salsa to the market by 4:30pm, labeled with name, phone number, and provide a list of ingredients. Judging to begin at 5pm; winner announced (and salsa sampling!) at 5:30pm.

You can also get a taste of the whole market! Join market manager, Serena Jones, for a market tour at 6pm. Get acquainted with our farmers and food producers, learn a little about their stories, why they do what they do and the history of Countryside.

Saturday, August 10th • Countryside Farmers' Market at Howe Meadow, 9am-12pm

Taste 60+ varieties from Baker's Fresh Produce, Banzhaf Garten Organic Farm, Front 9 Farm, Infinite Garden Farm, Little Bean Farm & Larder, Log Cabin Farm, Martha's Farm, Mud Run Farm, Purplebrown Farmstead, Rainbow Gardens, and Red Basket Farm.

Sunday, August 11th • Countryside Public Market, 10am-2pm

Showcasing varieties from Front 9 Farm & Let's Grow Akron!

Jimmy Myers, from Front 9 Farm, will be giving a Tomato Talk at 11am and will tell shoppers all about his unique growing techniques, answer questions and more!

Plus a Salsa Smackdown! Enter your favorite (locally-sourced) salsa to win a Countryside cutting board - handcrafted by Darbynwoods Find Woodworking (made with Ohio wood!) and engraved with the Countryside chicken.
To enter: email Alicia at ahall@cvcountryside.org to register. Bring your salsa to the market by 11:00am, labeled with name, phone number, and provide a list of ingredients. (***Local ingredients strongly encouraged.) Judging to begin at 11:30am; winner announced (and salsa sampling!) at 12:00pm.

WAIT! There's more! Recycle Pots & Pans will be collecting your extra kitchen and dishware to distribute to families that need them!
